How A Website Adds Value

-by Wendy Sullivan - Blue Shutter
As a small business owner, you may be wondering why you need a website or why you would need to update your website. You may be thinking it is just not in your budget and would not be a good investment. So ask yourself, “How is anyone going to find my business and become my client if I don’t have a website? If I am hiring, how will my potential employees find me?” Are you advertising locally in newspapers or radio, or by mailing flyers or postcards? What if that potential customer does a search in their favorite search engine, will they find you? They will if you have a website.

By having a website, you help establish your credibility as a business. While trends in technology and culture change over time, websites are one concept that has stood the test of time, as compared to various social platforms such Myspace and Google+. In 2006 BJ Fogg, Ph.D. at Stanford University, shared a slide deck titled "What Makes A Website Credible?" Two of the items he listed under "Why does Web credibility matter?" are:
• Web sites are first customer contact point
• The Web is not going away

Fast forward from 2006 to 2015 and you can still find articles that address how a website adds value to your business.

“A website is a direct reflection of a business. Is your site mobile friendly and is your content up-to-date? Does it convey that you are a successful, thriving business with a large client base? Is your business brand presented professionally? Visitors will make decisions based on their perception of your business as they see it through the lens of your website”.
How does a website add value to a business? - Heather Cox

And yes, the concept is still being discussed. One example can be found at "Does A Website Add Value To Your Business?" published by InterEdge Marketing.
Building on the credibility that you are generating for your business with a website, you can also connect with new customers. To help clients find your business, your website should be mobile friendly to rank higher in search engine results. If you have a site that was created more than 5 years ago, then you should review your site on a mobile device to see if it is responsive. If not, then it is time to make some updates.

Once you have a potential new customer, your site can explain your business to first-time visitors. A good website will define your business. For example, if you are an electrician, you can indicate whether your work is commercial, residential, or both. A new homeowner is not going to want to engage with an electrician that only works on commercial projects - your website should clearly indicate to that potential customer that you work on residential projects. Additionally, your site’s ‘About Us' section can differentiate you from your competitors and define your value proposition.
